How does the Law of Attraction Work?

In this article, I will attempt to explain in terms that make sense as to why the law of attraction works in our lives. Once you understand the mechanism that actually turns the gears of our separate realities, your beliefs in the law of attraction strengthen.

Separate Realities

Each one of us creates our own reality. Our individual reality is layered upon our unique belief system. It's true that many people share common beliefs, but we all have our own belief foundation upon which we accept possibilities. Some people accept the intention manifestation concept - we manifest what we think about - and others don't accept this. The problem with not accepting the belief in the law of attraction is that is works anyway, all the time whether you believe it or not. This means we are constantly attracting through our repetetive thoughts - we're just ignorant of this fact.
This means that attracting something you want is incredibly difficult if you believe you can't. If you want to attract money, but you think it's impossible and you continue to dwell on lack, then you will attract lack. Your belief is more powerful than your intention.
Let's say you set forth the intention to win the lottery. You declare it out loud, and run off to the convenience store to buy a ticket. You hold this ticket in your hand, and declare that you are the winner. You anxiously await the reading of the number on the live drawing, or check on the internet. But guess what...you didn't win. Why? Because your belief in the law of probability is the foundation and the intention to win the lottery is layered upon it, and you believe that the odds of winning are in the millions to one. It's like trying to grow vegetables on a concrete slab. If our concrete beliefs underly our intentions, our intentions are futile and doomed from the start.

If your belief in the law of probability was replaced by knowing that we create our own separate reality with our thoughts, winning the lottery is easily doable. Relaxing our beliefs in certain things enables us to create through the law of attraction. All of us have the creative process churning out our reality every day of our lives. Knowing that our thoughts create our unique reality is empowering.

Let Go of Disempowering Beliefs

I suggest letting go of weaker beliefs first - like the belief in competition. For instance, your up for a promotion. You and another person at your workplace are 'competing' for this job. Give up the belief that anyone has intentions other than you, because the fact is in a subjective reality, you project your intentions on other people. The other employee at your job is a projection of your thoughts and has no intentions of their own, and therefore not in competition with you. Try letting go of this notion and see what happens. Let go of the belief that this person is competing with you, and see yourself getting the position. Put on your own unique blinders about your desires, and disregard other distractions such as in this example.

Understanding that your beliefs are nothing more than repetetive thoughts means that our beliefs are up for grabs and programmable.

Once you understand that your life is controlled by your beliefs and the law of attraction is layered upon those beliefs, you can begin to relax some of your beliefs and allow your life to be of your own creation.

You have absolute control over your own life through the adoption and relaxation of beliefs in your life. You write the script. You may choose to poison your own intentions by thinking about past failures of the law of attraction for you, or by considering your present situation and observing the lack in it. But if you want the law of attraction to work for you, then follow these steps:
  • Declare your intention
  • Focus on having your intention - put on your blinders to distractions
  • Let go of past non-successes
  • Expect results and be thankful at the same time
  • Understand that your reality is of your own making
  • Relax limiting beliefs
  • Understand that we project intentions onto others
It's always rewarding to hear about people's successes with the law of attraction when it is understood and used for personal benefit. If this seems a bit too overwhelming for you, I suggest you try segment intending. Abraham-Hicks has done some illuminating work on this subject. Refer to the earlier post on this strategy. I also recommend Steve Pavlina's book. He explains in greater detail these concepts.

Bear in the Woods - Intention Manifestation

This is an example of using the law of attraction that I feel compelled to share. The other day I decided to prove to myself once again that the law of attraction works, and to add to my confidence that the manifestation/intention process is learnable.
Most mornings I go for a three to five mile mountain bike ride in the White Mountain National Forest which is right behind my house. For me, this is a peaceful time to be alone and think about my constant quest for self improvement. I like to understand more about how the intention manifestation model of reality works, practice and hone my law of attraction skills, or just plain exercise.
While biking in the woods on this day, I set out with the intention that I wanted to see a bear. I declared to myself that is what I wanted and had declared my intention aloud, despite the risk of being caught mumbling to myself.
Following the rules of the use of the law of attraction, I knew without doubt that I would see one. Although I do see bears about every two months or so, the odds of seeing one on command are obviously beyond probability.
I declared my intent, believed it would happen, and waited patiently for it.
Well, during my ride, I did not see a bear. This was not discouraging for me, however, because I was patient and am very determined to grasp the law of attraction as much as I can during this lifetime. If I had done something wrong in my attempt at this manifestation, so be it. I can hone my skills further.
That evening, as I was sitting in my screened room talking to my wife, I saw movement over her shoulder some two hundred yards away. I looked, knowingly, expectingly, and patiently and there was the bear I had ordered, right on cue. I immediately felt gratitude for this sign that I am learning the fine art of intention manifestation.
The next day while on my morning ride, I had pictured in my mind seeing the bear running across the path in front of me, at a ninety degree angle to the path. Less than three minutes later, to my absolute delight and excitement, an adolescent black bear ran across the trail at a ninety degree angle to me. It was no more than 75 feet away, exactly as I had pictured it.
The odds of seeing a bear that day are probably greater than one in sixty. The odds of seeing two bears on two consecutive days in exactly the manner I had visualized - well, you get the idea.
I consider this experience in my reality beyond coincidence, and take it as a sign that I am honing my skills at attracting the things into my life that I desire. I truly hope you have similar progress. I do credit my success to things I've read and practiced. A great starter book is Personal Development for Smart People: The Conscious Pursuit of Personal Growth.
Steve Pavlina's work is life changing stuff, and he explains what his views are about law of attraction, intention manifestation, subjective reality, and other mind expanding material.
Keep growing!

True Reality

Wow. Every once in a while some information comes along about the law of attraction that makes so much sense to me, I can't wait to tell other people about it. I found this information on stevepavlina.com and this and many other great insights are available here for free.
The specific podcast I am referring to is called "The True Nature of Reality". It discusses various models of reality from an objective standpoint and concludes by pointing to two keys regarding the use of the law of attraction. His book Personal Development for Smart People: The Conscious Pursuit of Personal Growth I highly recommend.
When someone puts out an intention in the form of a request through visualization, for instance, the law of attraction responds within the first day or so with some tidbit of confirmation that your request has been received. It may be an extra unexpected small sum of money if your request was for a very large sum. This, Steve Pavlina suggests is your receipt of sorts, and a sign that your request was recognized.
After this first phase of proof that the law of attraction has some momentum, there may be a significant amount of time passing before the full manifestation of your desires comes to pass. Between the first sign and the full manifestation, many people quit having not seen greater evidence of their request. Like Abraham-Hicks says, because they can't see their progress, they might quit and never realize their dream.
I can't tell you how many times I personally have seen small tidbits of my desires soon after my request was made and my response was that this was not enough...my request must not have been powerful enough. I want to emphasize to anyone reading to stick with it...expect, be patient, and use your first receipt as a sign from the universe that your desire is on its way!
One of the first reads I recommend is Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires

Google Abraham/Hicks works...if you're into understanding more about your life and how to live the way you want, I bet you'll like their material.

Manifesting wishes

Patience, patience. Why is it that some things immediately pop up into our life when we give them attention and other things take so long? Have you ever noticed how mundane pieces of life appear repeatedly once you give what seems like passing attention to them? When I think about buying a certain car, suddenly, they appear at every street corner. The other day I saw an osprey (large bird of prey) and immediately began seeing more predatory birds in places I'd never seen them before.

These examples of the law of attraction in action shouldn't go unnoticed as they are very important reinforcements to our belief in the law of attraction. Abraham-Hicks, Rhonda Byrne and others hadn't driven home this message to me. But once I observed this phenomenon, the messages in their works suddenly becomes obvious.
Basically, everything in our lives is a result of our thoughts. Sounds simple, but break it down and apply it to the buying a car example above, it suddenly makes sense.

Now, why do the mundane things appear instantaneously and the 'bigger' things seem to appear slowly? It is because the bigger things in our lives tend to be wrapped up in conflicting emotions. We want something, BUT, there can be doubt, emotions of unworthiness, fears of disappointment when things don't show up, and more thoughts that result in a push-pull effect on the manifestation of our desires. This keeps them in a vibrational holding pattern, and until our 'good thoughts' overpower our weaker negative thoughts, we hold our desires on the other side of a locked door.

The good news is that repeated good thoughts and emotions will win if we persist. Think of the GPS analogy that Esther Hicks and Abraham use. You're on a road trip and you're traveling from Phoenix to San Diego. You program your GPS (just as you program your mind to reach a certain goal) and because you can SEE your progress, you know you are getting there. But sometimes when we use the Secret or the Law of Attraction we can't 'see' our progress, because it is vibrational progress. Things in our lives are completed 99% vibrationally before we see physical evidence of our desires. The good news is we have our emotional GPS. By using our feelings, you can feel you are reaching your goals. When we feel good when we give attention to our desires, we are moving closer to their fruition. Although we can't see our progress, we can feel it, and we must use our will power to sustain the powerful emotions of optimism and other feelings of positive expectation. Keep the faith, persist and know your GPS is working.

This is the first entry in this blog, my attempt at sharing my own experiences in the hopes of refining my techniques to produce an ever evolving and improving life experience for me and whovever reads about them. I earnestly encourage entries from everyone so we can share our own polished techniques and success stories as well as those techniques that don't work.
I know there is a plethura of law of attraction information out there. I just wanted to get other folks to write and share.
I got hooked on this stuff years ago. I realized long ago that our thoughts have power and other people can pick up on them. I had a real epiphany while in college that made me realize that our minds are underutilized and I have been gathering information since. The law of attraction is part of this new awareness, and I have had many positive experiences over the last year since reading "The Secret", Abraham-Hicks materials and others. It's all good information and helpful. The Hicks materials actually helped me clarify some things regarding the loa. But there still seems to be one more piece to the puzzle missing, and that is a good book on visualization. There was a book called "Directing the Movies of Your Mind" by Adelaide Brye, and I got some amazing results using that book. However, we need an updated version of this powerful material and something more relevant and updated.
Some of successes of my past year include my wife's improved health. She decided to lose some significant weight after years of my positive reinforcement. I finally decided to let go and not mention it again but give thanks for her new weight and her new level of well being. This was pivotal as she since lost over fifty pounds and continues to lose.
Another manifestation of me using the law of attraction is the accumulation of $12,000 in cash. I have never been able to do this, and I watched some YouTube videos regarding money manifestation, read more in Abraham-Hicks materials and found myself always having extra cash around. I would convert twenties to hundreds, and began to put it away. Soon I had over $12,000.
Yet another dream come true for me, I always wanted to take a trip to a Caribbean destination. My wife never wanted to go. This past year, I would "see" us on the plane, looking out the window at the tropical waters and smile at one another. Yes, this also came true. I would picture us on a beach in Mexico together and segment intend our days as fun, adventurous, bonding and relaxing...and that's just what they were.
There are many more examples of the loa in action in my life, most more mundane and not all positive. I began to realize that it always works, not just when we notice it. We attract constantly, and it's breaking old thought habits that proves to be most daunting to me personally. As Abraham says, "You're living a new life, it's just that you're offering the same vibration and getting the same results over and over. You've got to tell a different story."
And that truly is the work of this life. I hope that this blog solicits other incite from people truly interested in having a better life for themselves and others.
